Beginning with the raising of the regiment for battle, and following the story through to the decisive victory on the 18th June 1815, the display gives visitors the opportunity to see rarely seen artefacts. 

Examples of items on display in ‘The Road to Waterloo’ are:

  • Medals of the Commanding Officer of The Gordon Highlanders at Waterloo, Lieutenant Colonel Donald McDonald
  • Medals of the Pipe Major of The Gordon Highlanders at Waterloo, Pipe Major Alexander Cameron
  • Psalm book carried on the person of Lieutenant Colonel John Cameron of Fassiefern, Commanding Officer of The Gordon Highlanders 1810 – 1815, who was mortally wounded two days before Waterloo at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16th June 1815
  • Military General Service Medal relating to Private Robert Watt, who joined The Gordon Highlanders when the Regiment was raised in 1794 aged 9. Watt fought all the way through to Waterloo in 1815, where he was wounded.
  • The complete uniform of Ensign John Bramwell, who was wounded at Waterloo, on loan from the National Army Museum

 The National Army Museum’s ‘Waterloo Lives’ display, offers visitors the opportunity to go back to 1815 and discover some of the personal stories of the soldiers and their families. The ‘Waterloo Lives’ exhibition at the Gordon Highlanders Museum is a part of a series of activities and events produced by the National Army Museum. Taking place across the country, these events will be bringing the legendary battle to life, aiming to connect audiences with the impact of the battle on the individual, the community and society.
